What a founder content strategy actually contains

A content calendar is a schedule. A strategy is the set of decisions that make the schedule worth running. Most founders who say they have a strategy have a colour-coded spreadsheet and no point of view.

Who the content is for - and who it is not

Start with the buyer, partner, hire, or investor you want in the room - not with "everyone in my industry". Eksplode works with established founders, typically around the $1M+ stage, where the offer already works and personal brand is an amplifier, not a substitute for product-market fit.

If you cannot name the person who should stop scrolling, you will produce generic founder content that flatters your ego and confuses your market. Positioning comes before volume.

Pillars, voice, and the proof you are allowed to use

Pillars are the three to five recurring themes you can speak about without inventing a persona. Voice is how you sound when you are precise and honest - not a brand-voice adjective list. Proof is what you can actually show: named results where you have them, clear role and company facts everywhere else.

Named proof we publish includes Mike Thurston (0 to 581.9K followers), Rachel Godfrey (34K to 201K), Joss Mooney (22.3K to 93.2K), and Dylan Ferguson (0 to 10.4K YouTube subscribers on a Dubai real estate channel). Dr Adeel Khan and Matiss Ansviesulis appear as named industry proof without follower claims. Do not pad a strategy with metrics you cannot stand behind.

Platforms and cadence that match the job

Instagram and YouTube are primary. TikTok is in the mix when short-form discovery matters. Short-form finds people; long-form gives them a reason to trust you. A strategy that treats every platform as equal is usually a strategy that underperforms on all of them.

Cadence should match founder availability and package reality - for example 30 short-form pieces a month, or that volume plus 4 or 8 YouTube videos - not an aspirational daily streak that dies in week two.

What "good" looks like before you film

Good means a stranger can tell what you do, who it is for, and why you are credible within a few pieces. Good means scripts exist before the shoot. Good means the edit has a recognisable visual identity instead of whatever template was trending that morning.

Eksplode's system runs positioning and strategy, scripts before the shoot, directed production, editing with a consistent look, posting, and analytics. Strategy that stops at "post three times a week" is not strategy - it is a reminder notification.

  • Audience definition before content ideas
  • Pillars and voice before formats
  • Platform roles before posting frequency
  • Success criteria before vanity metrics

Questions

What should be in a founder content strategy document?

Who it is for, what you will not talk about, content pillars, voice rules, primary platforms, cadence, and a plain definition of what good looks like. If the document is mostly a calendar grid, it is a schedule, not a strategy.

Do I need a different strategy for Instagram and YouTube?

You need one positioning with different jobs per platform. Instagram and TikTok carry discovery through short-form. YouTube carries authority and trust through long-form. The story stays yours; the format and packaging change.

How is a content strategy different from a content calendar?

Strategy decides the bets. The calendar sequences the output. Without strategy, a calendar just schedules noise. With strategy, the calendar becomes an operating tool for a team that already knows what to protect and what to cut.

Can an agency write the strategy without sitting in my business for months?

Yes, if you give them honest access: offer, buyer, proof, and the stories only you can tell. Eksplode runs positioning and scripts before production precisely so shoot days are not improvisation. The founder still owns final approval on anything that speaks as them.
